Wool

As well as being beautiful, warm, tactile and natural, wool offers such versatile and amazing qualities that it can be cool in summer and cosy in the winter months.

With cooler weather on the horizon as Autumn/winter approaches, what better way to brighten up a dull day than with one of our signature ‘brights’ At the Wild Blanket Company we are all about natural materials and wool is at the top of our list when we want to warm up.

Its available all over the world

There are literally millions of willing sheep out there offering up a least one full fleece a year. Sheep are domesticated farm animals who arguably would be extinct without farming. The health of the sheep, particularly in the summertime, depends on a good shearing. Sadly, farmers are not universally well paid for raw wool. We want to help change this by supporting British farmers.

It’s natural

Wool is considered one of the most effective forms of all-weather protection. Advances in technology mean that man-made fibres are much more effective than ever before, but Wool still remains unrivalled in its versatile properties.

Reactive and intelligent

Wool is an active insulating fibre which can react to temperature and moisture. Its tightly packed fibres are breathable allowing it to retain warmth when its chilly and to maintain your body temperature when its warm.

Resilient & elastic

Due to its crimped structure, wool is also naturally elastic, and so woven wool has the ability to stretch comfortably and then return its original shape. This makes it resistant to wrinkling and sagging, maintaining appearance for longer and adding to its lifespan. This means our products are wrinkle resistant and easy to pack for a day out or mini-break.

Easy to keep clean & odour resistant

As its primary function is to protect the body of a sheep to the surrounding environment, wool fibres have a natural protective outer layer making woollen products resistant to staining and odour absorption and they also pick up less dust as the surface of the wool is naturally anti-static.

Renewable

As long as there is grass to graze on, every year sheep will produce a new fleece; making wool a renewable fibre source. Woolgrowers actively work to safeguard the environment and improve efficiency, endeavouring to make the wool industry sustainable for future generations.

Biodegradable

At the end of its useful life, wool can be returned to the soil, where it decomposes, releasing valuable nutrients into the ground. When a natural wool fibre is disposed of in soil, it takes a very short time to break down, whereas most synthetics are extremely slow to degrade.

Wool is naturally safe

It is not known to cause allergies and does not promote the growth of bacteria. It can even reduce floating dust due to its anti-static properties. Thanks to its high water and nitrogen content, wool is naturally flame-retardant, and has a far higher ignition threshold than many other fibres, producing less noxious fumes when burned. Finally, wool also has a naturally high level of UV protection, which is much higher than most synthetics and cotton.
