A beautifully made woollen blanket is a gift that can truly last a lifetime, This sentiment has become part of an important family tradition for us.
"The absence of physical touch can cause us to become isolated from, not just others but from ourselves"
Gift of an Heirloom Blanket
A herringbone blanket, handed down four generations and gifted to me by my Mother, was the start of this tradition for me. As a family it has to be said that we are a little bit blanket obsessed. A baby blanket which swaddled my daughter was my gift to her which she still cherishes over 20 years later. A blanket that my Uncle was given to take to boarding school 50 years ago when he was small, still has his name label sewn in to the hem. The wonderful thing is, when cared for properly woollen blankets live forever and when handed down, they can remain as a ‘hugging’ reminder of someone special. We call them ‘heirloom blankets’ They are for sharing and for reminiscing over next to a log fire, they are for story time and campfires, picnics and dog walks, car journeys and sofa time, festivals and outdoor cinema trips” but most of all they are for hugging.
During the lockdown period we've all had a reminder of how important hugs can be for general wellbeing. A good hug can rejuvenate your heart, soul and mind. The absence of physical touch can cause us to feel isolated from others but also from ourselves. Facetime and Blanket-hugs were the way forward for us!
